Cycling the Lion City: Modern History Through Local Eyes

Discover Singapore’s modern history on two wheels, guided through the eyes of a local. This cycling tour connects iconic landmarks and hidden corners of the Lion City with personal stories, weaving together the nation’s transformation and the lived experiences of those who grew alongside it. Each stop along the route is not just a piece of history, but a reflection of resilience, growth, and the Singapore spirit.

The 3.5 hours, 26km cycling adventure takes you through Singapore’s story of history, cultural harmony, modern innovation, and everyday life.

We begin at the Penang Road Open Space, once a civic gathering ground, before riding past the historic Oxley Residence, home of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister.

The path then brings us into Chinatown, where cultural harmony is beautifully expressed: the grand Sri Mariamman Temple stands side by side with a Chinese temple and a mosque, showcasing how different communities have lived together in respect for generations.

From heritage, we move into modernity at The Promontory@Marina Bay, with stunning waterfront views, before continuing to the Marina Barrage, a national icon where sustainability meets leisure against a backdrop of the city skyline.

At mid-journey, we take a well-deserved break at Old Airport Road Food Centre, famed for its chicken rice and hawker classics. Here, you’ll also see the surrounding HDB flats—Singapore’s unique public housing that more than 80% of locals call home—offering a glimpse into everyday life beyond the tourist spots. Refueled, we pedal east into Joo Chiat, where the colorful Peranakan Houses tell stories of blended cultures with their ornate tiles and pastel facades.

Finally, the journey concludes at Bedok Jetty, a beloved spot for fishing, cycling, and sea views, where the breeze and horizon remind us of Singapore’s island soul.
